Tom Service Guardian Blog (Monday 5th December 2011)
Delius's string concertos may be unfashionable – but I love them.
Many may sneer, but Delius's concertos for violin, cello, and his double concerto for both, show that musical fashion has got it wrong. This is great music.
Lovely blog entry, read it here: |

In the Violin Concerto and the Double Concerto, Tasmin Little is every bit as persuasively expressive as on her earlier recordings with Charles Mackerras. Paul Watkins provides the partnership you'd expect from such a fine chamber musician in the Double, and copes effortlessly with the problems of the original version of the Cello Concerto. Andrew Davis paces everything magisterially, always allowing enough space at moments of hushed stillness. The recording, at least in stereo, seems slightly too close-up on the soloists, relegating some fine orchestral playing to the middle distance. But that's a minor blemish on a disc that will give great pleasure to all lovers of Delius's music.

PERFORMANCE ***** RECORDING **** |
|
Twenty years ago Tasmin Little recorded the Delius Violin and Cello Concerto with Raphael Wallfisch and the RLPO under Sir Charles Groves. Now she has recorded it again with Paul Watkins, Sir Andrew Davis and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. She couples it with the Violin Concerto and Watkins completes this Chardos record with the Cello Concerto, also on the Liverpool disc This is a well programmed release, gaining from an up to date sound, and while this is all the first rate Delius, well realised, it also shows that the Violin Concerto should be a regular part of the repertoire. |

2008 Classic FM Award for Audience Innovation: Tasmin Little
Tasmin writes:
It was a real thrill to receive the news that my Naked Violin download and project had been chosen to receive the Classic FM Award for Audience Innovation at the Gramophone Awards. The award ceremony, something akin to the Oscars in music circles, took place at lunchtime on Thursday 25th and my only sadness was that, due to performance commitments, I was unable to attend and receive my award in person!
Gramophone Magazine invited me to write a few words about my award to be read out during the ceremony and here is what I wrote: |
I was surprised and completely delighted to hear that I have been chosen to receive the Classic FM Award for Audience Innovation for my project The Naked Violin. The response to my download, both internationally and in the UK, was overwhelming; and this, plus the South Bank Show television programme about my project, has proved to me that classical music is as vital a part of our lives today as it has ever been.
I have a few brief, but heartfelt Thank Yous:
First of all, to John West and Limo Hearn, who produced and engineered The Naked Violin.
To Horst Kolo, my brilliant and tireless webmaster and to IFDNRG who host my site.
To Shona Galletly, who did a superb job publicising the download.
And to Sinead O'Carroll my project co-ordinator, and Denise Kantor, my PA.
Thank you so much to Classic FM and to Gramophone Magazine for this huge honour.
It has been an amazing year and this award is the icing on the cake!
Congratulations to all the other award winners and have a fabulous lunch!
